A few days ago, I saw my younger brother reading something very attentively sitting on his reading table. I know him as a person who stays far away from the book. Curiosity popped in my mind. When I went to him, I saw that he is reading a book Which is something like'how to ride a bicycle'.He is trying to grasp the theoretical and mechanism part of bicycle riding.

Most of us do the same thing in different spheres of our life. But, everything is not about knowing the theories. The most important thing in learning something is practicing. You have to read the theories, learn them but to make you skilled, you have to practice. Practice makes a man perfect as we all know. And this is also applicable in a writer's life too. A writer is a person who gradually builds ownself through practicing. Practice builds experience.
There is no exact formula that a writer can follow to make them the most perfect writer . It's more about his/her experiences rather than a particular training. Writers are always learning and they are always changing, changing in their thought, in their experiences with the world which reflect in their writing. If you notice, you would get to see people have different writing styles which are so idiosyncratic because their experiences are different, their ways of looking at the world are different.
Writing is not an institutional thing. It's not like that one starts learning writing when s/he goes to school and ends with their school farewell. It's a continuous learning process. People use to learn every day. Some people used to think that writers are born with the blessing of their writing skill or they have been provided special training on learning thus they become writers. But this is not true. The ability to write well doesn't come naturally or one can have it easily. Everyone has the potential to be a writer, I believe. You just have to experience the world and put your feelings in ink. You may not be perfect for the first time, But you would gradually develop with days going by. Writers have more to learn. Writers are never done being skilled. It's a layered process built based on experiences and interacting with the world around them. Shirley Rose in her writing ' All writers have more to learn' said, 'Writing is not just transcribing performed ideas but also developing new ones.' Writers never stop learning writing.
Failure is a thing that we always take in a negative way. But in a writer's life, it can come positively. Failure can be considered as an opportunity to develop. Failure leads to success. If anyone ends up with brilliant writing at his first try that doesn't mean who can't are not writers. Failures show the right way to develop them and turn them into successful writers later.
"Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere"(Lamott 1995,303). Edward Burgar (2012), Professor of Mathematics and co-author of 'The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking ' explained,'They must have the opportunity to try, to fail and to learn from those failures as a means of intellectual growth. In reality, every idea from every discipline is a human idea that comes from a natural, thoughtful and unending journey in which thinkers deeply understand the current state of knowledge ,take a tiny step in a new direction, almost immediately hit a dead end, learn from that misstep, and, through iteration, inevitably move forward ."
As The FYC teacher, What One Has To Keep In Mind...

Find Out The Difficulties Students Struggle With -
The first responsibility of the FYC teacher is figuring out the difficulties the students used to face while writing. The teacher has to mark them and work on them with the students. Because before starting, we all have the same fear in mind as "this is not my thing, I can't do it'.
So what are the problems, generally the students face-
*Generating idea-It's a very common issue. Most of us just avoid writing because we don't have ideas on how to start it or about what to write.

So the first thing, a teacher can do to help the students brainstorming.
Don't Find Appropriate words /Sentence-We have many feeling in us for various thing but can't juxtapose them properly in a sentence. We think in mind but can't get them out in word and lack of rhetorical knowledge is also another reason.
Teachers can help them with this too. The teacher can require a draft of writing on anything and then help each student with their problems. For sure , the next time they would come with a better one.
The first thing as the FYC teacher, you have to keep in mind that, writing is an ongoing learning process, you are learning every day. Nobody is done with their learning. This applies to both the students and teachers.

Encourage Your Students To Make Mistakes- Failure is not a thing of embarrassment. Don't discourage them if they come up with very awful drafts and too many mistakes. Rather encourage them to embrace the failure, Tell them to make mistakes and learn from them and keep writing until they get the right track. Failure can lead them to success. So, as an FYC teacher, you have an important role here to take them in the right way and help them ended up in being a good writer.
Emphasis On Their Writing Practice-We all know the importance of practice in our life. Through practice, they can develop their thinking, they can lose their emotions and think to different spheres. As a teacher, you can engage them in different activities which include their active participation and give them a chance to think. Before a final research project, you make them do drafts. Comment on their drafts and try to find out what they are lacking and help them to get out of it. Let them do writings on current issues and which are kind of their interest and so practical. So they would tend to use their brains to think over these. And drafting again and again would help them to enrich their knowledge on writing and their rhetorical part would also be developed.
Keep The Practice Of Revision -Revision is an essential part of writing. The writing will be much more specific and rhetorically well developed if someone revises it again and again. Because it is a common human nature, If we revise our writing, We would find more suitable words or information than before to add in the writing. Because then, the writer is already enriched in that topic. So encourage your students to revise their writing again and again to get the best out of it.
Assessment-A Very Essential Component -Assessment is a critical component of Writing and learning to write. In every stage of the writing process, it is so essential. Because through assessment one can get the evaluation of his/her work. Without assessment, one can't find their mistakes out and make their works perfect. To learn and progress, writers need to develop their assessment abilities, Though a variety of activities, a teacher can integrate assessment throughout the learning process. Thus students would be benefitted. The assessment activities can be formalized too. As a teacher, you can help students prepare for future writing tasks and opportunities through teaching them how to assess both the product and process of their work.
The FYC teachers hold a lead role to introduce students to the writing world. So The teachers should be more careful about the instructions provided to the students. The teacher has to make them love writing, make them find the essence of writing winning the fear. Writing is not of some special person's thing. It's open for all. You just have to open your brain to get the things happening around you and get them in your ink. It wouldn't work for the first time, but as you try to focus on it, you would end up with a very satisfied version of you in the reign of the writing world.
You drew on a lot of the threshold concepts here. The points about failure and practice seemed particularly interesting. I liked the story at the beginning of this post, but I wonder: are there downsides to comparing writing to learning to ride a bicycle? It seems that writing needs practice, but also isn't something you can master once and for all like bike riding. Then again, I never learned to ride a bike, so I might not be the one to ask. :)
Hi wschesher ,
Thanks for you comment.
Yes,this is the thing, we all should keep in mind(that you mentioned).A person becomes efficient and specialist in any particular sector,When s/he digs into it and enhances skill through practicing.
Hi Nilima,
I think you bring up two really interesting ideas: We can teach students ABOUT writing, but they need to write to learn how to write. We can discuss theories all day (with students and with each other), but there needs to be opportunity to try new things and practice. Pairing this with your comments on the writing process helps students consider where they can practice and where they can try new things. When a student gets stuck, have them try a new brainstorming process. When they get frustrated because they can't find sources, have them go back to practicing finding sources.
I also think it's really important to have students understand that taking ENG 103 and ENG 104…
